Nikon 80-400 AF-S Test Images
Nikon 80-400 AF-S test using Nikon D200 and D800E
D200 with 12 Point Focus System and 1000 PX Light Metre, and D800E with 51 Point Focus System and 91,000 PX Light Metre
In theory the D200 would not be as fast at focus tracking and locking on, in comparison to the D800E.
I can say two things regarding this new 80-400 and using a D200 compared to the D800E or D4
The lens 80-400 is almost a fast at focusing as my 400 F2.8 VR-II,, yes the lens will be a little darker, and yes you will need to keep checking your shutter speed, when the clouds roll over, however, the 80-400 will lock focus every time, and FAST, no hunting at all
The above was on the D800E, I then put the D200 on and THE SAME, I did not notice any drop in performance at all, the focus tracking and speed was exactly the same
Maybe when the D200 is pushed hard in very low light, ie shooting in winter heavy dark clouds at Brands Hatch, then I think you will lose a tad of foucus lock, so maybe that when the D800E/D4 will gain
As a 400 F2.8 VRII user, this 80-400 AF-S is bang on fast, and the great thing about this lens is I can carry it ALL day, and you can see in this set some 160 sec panning , try that on the F2,8, so the 80-400 AF-S it is a tad darker, a tad slower focus, and I mean a tad, but the lens is small and light to carry, and tack sharp
